Wedding Wednesday: Event Planners vs. Event Designers

There seems to be a new trend in the event world...well maybe not new, just now there in a name for it. During my endless hours of web surfing in the party and wedding world wide web, the title "event designers" has become quite common.

Is there a difference between and "event planner" vs. an "event designer"? I had a hunch, but thought I would do some research on the subject. From what I have found..yes..there is a difference. Although the terms have in the past been used interchangeably, it is now time for the event people to pick a side.

The qualifications of either of these service providers comes down to simply..do you plan or do you design?

I have decided that I am unequivocally an event DESIGNER! My job is to make your event the best in can possibly be and more importantly UNIQUE.

New Etsy Addition: Tween Birthday Invites

My daughter was invited to her first sleepover a few days ago. Although she is only 5, she has promised us that she can be gone all night. After many discussion between my husband and myself, we decided to let her go. It helps that it is a neighbor, so if we get that 2 am call..it's just a hop, skip and a jump to get her.

I can't help reminiscing about all the slumber parties I attended and thinking about all the fun my girlfriends and I had. I'm so excited for Maddie, because I know she will have such a blast.

All this slumber party talk inspired me and of course..ended up in invitation form. I'm excited to put them on etsy..even if it might mean one more frozen bra!

Friday Craft: modge podge shoes

I have one goal this weekend...to do this project. I have had this craft on my pin board forever, so I thought we should start off the 2012 return of "Friday craft" with this one!

One of my resolutions is to try and actually do all the Friday crafts. I will do my best, but with 3 kiddos..it is tough. I do, however, have a very persistent five year old daughter, and when I tell her we are going to do something, she remembers. Her nagging should help my procrastination!

I would love to know if any of my wonderful readers try the crafts as well. If so..send me the pic and we can all show 'em off together!!

2011 Executive Creations YEAR IN REVIEW

2011 was a fabulous year for Executive Creations! Here is a look back to all the wonderful highlights.

1) 2011 was the year of Etsy! Although EC opened an etsy shop in 2008, we did not build our store until the end of 2010. With only 4 sales under our belt at the start of 2011, we ended this year with 35 additional sales and over 60 new shop admires. We have also been welcomed into 32 Treasuries on Etsy this year!

2) Indianapolis launch of Wish Upon a Wedding. In 2011, Indianapolis launched its "Wish Upon a Wedding" Chapter, a non-for-profit organization that grants weddings to couples facing terminal illness (where one has been diagnosed with less than five years to live). EC was honored to pick to do the stationery for Janice and Cory. EC is honored to be called a "wish granter".

3) Dreamers into Doers "Doer of the Week"

I was chosen as the 21st "doer" of the week in 2011 from Martha Stewart's "Dreamers into Doers" forum. Anyone that knows me, knows my love and awe of Martha Stewart. Not just her talented eye and taste, but her business sense as well. To be chosen by her staff was definitely a "full circle" moment for me.

4) The introduction of Animal Cracker Events! This year we launched our sister company Animal Crackers which specializes in children's celebrations. Everything from custom invitations to full service event design and styling.

5) Plum District Feature! In December of 2011, EC teamed up with Plum District to sell our teacher note cards at 50% off. The response was overwhelming with about 25 sales in 3 days!!

6) Custom Wedding Invitations. As the bread and butter of Executive Creations, we continued to have a banner year with our custom wedding invitations. In 2011 EC had over 15 new local bridal clients alone seeking custom wedding stationery.

7) Business Clients. 2011 was a great year working with our old and new business clients. From staff party and event gala invitations, custom logo design and business card design, 2011 was a busy year helping other businesses shine!

8) Executive Creations Celebrate Magazine feature! In December 2011, we were delighted to be featured in our first print magazine!

9) Babies and Kids. It seemed in 2011 that I was always working on something for the kiddos! We created custom invitations for over 15 celebrations for expecting babies and little tykes' birthdays!

10) Our Holiday Stationery! This was the first year EC introduced holiday stationery. Starting with Valentines Day, we made and sold products for Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Farewell 2011! Although it was a very exciting and full year, we cannot wait for 2012. Check back early in January 2012 for our New Year Resolutions!

Thank you to all my clients, vendors, colleagues, family and friends that have helped make Executive Creations what it is today. As we begin our 5th year of business, with you..we hope to make it yet our best!

5 Tips For A Knock-Out Candy Buffet

I love candy buffets. They have become a favorite at wedding receptions. Not only are they a yummy send off for your guests, but an eye catching focal point at your reception. Here are my top 5 tips to creating a perfect display.

1) Choose 2 or 3 colors and stick with them. Make sure all the item on the table have "mainly" those colors.

Animal Crackers Exclusive: Ellie's Tu-2-Tu Ballerina Party

An Animal Crackers Exclusive! My two year old loves to dance, so it was easy to decide on a theme. It has to be a dancing party! I decided on having a tu-2-tu ballerina party for her.

a couple of weeks before her party, I dressed her in a tutu and we went "out" dancing. She just ran around the yard and I snapped shots of her. They came out so cute, we kept them and they are now hanging in her room! I love functional decor!

I found the metal dress form at Hobby Lobby..it was black, but I painted it white:)

I found the frames at Hobby Lobby. There were pre made shadow boxes . We (my husband) busted out the back and made them into frames!

I trimmed this cake stand with this adorable ribbon I found.

Wedding Wednesday: Programs

I have a love/hate relationship with wedding programs. They are necessary, no doubt. You must give love to your bridal party and layout your ceremony. But, from a stationer's point of view, they become a little stressful, since they are usually the LAST product we whip out before the big day. I am usually sending urgent emails address the subject with my brides weeks before the wedding.."hey..how 'bout them programs"!

So this is an effort to give the programs the love and attention they deserve by bringing them up on the priority list. Yes, I know, you still have not talked to the organist about the music. That's okay, because what goes in the program is not what I am concerned about. It is the outstanding style and layout of your program that I need to nail down. I can change one song from to another in a second, or kick your second cousin off the bridesmaid list. No big deal at all! Let's just design a program that lives up to the rest of your ceremony stationery......now :)

Say My Name....love for the escort card!

I love escort cards! And although many brides may view them as an expendable detail...rest assure they are not. This is your one opportunity to acknowledge you guests. Your bridal party gets plenty of props through the program, rehearsal dinner, showers etc. and because the escort card is often lost in the tangle of last minute wedding "to dos", it often does not get the attention that can bring the escort card to it's show stopping possibilities! Not to mention, this may be the one thing your guests hang on to. After all, it does have their name on it and it's sorta difficult to toss your identity in the trash. My cards from weddings often end up on fridge for awhile to admire and then get put in my card keepsake box along with other thoughtful mementos from loved ones. If one of my kiddos was lucky enough to hang at the wedding...theirs always ends up in the baby book or the scrapbook (or the pile of papers that will soon turn into the scrapbook...that's for you honey!)

August Feature Follower of the Month: Beth Kruse Custom Creations!

The blog feature follower of this month is Beth Kruse from Beth Kruse Custom Creations. I did not have to go far looking for a great post...I fell in love with these pinwheels. I make these pin wheels all the time, but never thought of using hot glue so they actually work..duh!! I love that she made these for little Amercian Girl Dolls too!

you will need:

coordinating papers

spray glue

long pearlized straight pins

glue gun

small beads

lollipop sticks - 8in & 4in (for dolls)

push pin (did not make picture)

first spray the back of one paper generously with spray glue.

place other page on top

trim to 5 inch squares

cut from one corner towards the center.

i just eyeballed it, others may want to fold diagonally

to create lines to cut on

all 4 cuts made

put a dot of hot glue in the center and fold one corner in.

hold till dry.

repeat until all four corners are folded in

this is the part that varies in each tutorial.

i used a pushpin to create my hole.

it is strong, so easy to push through and it creates

a hole that is a little bigger than the pin

so the pinwheel will spin easily

stick the pin through the hole.

add 3 small beads

(this helps keep the pinwheel away from the stick

put a dab of hot glue on the end of the lollipop stick

then slide the pin into the middle of it.

bend the pin so that the pinwheel is facing forward

instead of up.

for the doll version, make a 3 inch square

and use the 4 inch lollipop stick

Here are my top 5 ideas to add a ton of "wow" to the party, but not the budget!!

1) Ditch the favor bags. While I am a huge fan of guest favors..what you put them in does not have to be the expensive party bag from the party store. Think about your theme and then think about what can double as "containers". I bought these red bandannas at Walmart for .50 each. I only needed 6, so I spent $3.00 total. I filled the goodies inside and tied them up with ribbon.

2) Do your own cutouts for hanging on the ceiling. I love hanging things from the ceiling! They add a ton of decor! I printed out these signs on orange card stock I had around the house.

3) Make your own drink labels. Instead of buying expensive theme cups, print out labels on your home printer and wrap them in colorful drinks. My favorite drink is Gatorade! Colorful with out the sugar!! Just take the original label off and cut a piece of paper the same size and reapply with a double sided tape.

4) Use books!! This is by far my best tip! You can buy second hand books at thrift stores, garage sales and discount book stores. You can get a ton of decor from one book. You can make drink labels, cupcake toppers and banners. You can also use them as favors for kids to take home!

5) Use what you already have. If your child is having a dinosaur birthday, odds are..your kid likes dinosaurs...therefore, you probably have a few dinosaurs around. Use them to help decorate. I used these farm animals as decor pieces at a farm birthday. They didn't cost me a cent:)

Wedding Maps..Or Not!

Okay...so I was going to do a blog post on wedding maps for the wedding invitation set. It seems I have been doing them more and more lately. But I have to be honest......I hate maps! Of all kinds. I am one of those directionally challenged people. I call my husband when I'm lost and he says "go north" and I say "right or left". So, back to my original point..wedding maps..it's on the blog schedule! So, I was looking around at pinterest and I found these, which are MUCH more fun!!!!! Enjoy!!!

Gearing up for fall with a color change!

Dyed wooden beaded necklace from Martha!

A quick dye gives unfinished beads a beachy, weathered look. These monochromatic necklaces, strung on leather cord, can be worn solo or piled on for effect.

Unfinished wooden beads are inexpensive and can be bought in bulk. Ours range from 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter, with 35 to 90 beads per necklace. Dye a few and let them dry for 15 minutes to test a hue.

Step 1

String wooden beads onto leather cord to determine how many to dye. Transfer beads onto floral wire. In a nonreactive bowl, mix 8 cups boiling water with dye.

Color Recipes

Submerge beads until desired shade is achieved. (Once dry, the color will be much lighter.) The dyes are from ritdye.com.

Yellow: 2 teaspoons Yellow

Blue-Green: 1/2 teaspoon Teal, 1/4 teaspoon Taupe

Light Blue: 1 teaspoon Evening Blue

Dark Blue: 1/4 teaspoon Denim Blue, 1/4 teaspoon Taupe, 1/4 teaspoon Teal

Step 2

Bend wire ends upward. Wearing rubber gloves, submerge beads for 2 to 6 minutes, agitating gently.

Step 3

Let dry overnight on paper towels. To seal beads (optional), spray with polyurethane, following manufacturer's directions; let dry. Restring beads on leather cord; knot and trim ends.

50th Anniversary Party

My grandparents recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with friends and family at an old church that is now a restaurant and reception venue. My grandma came up with all of the ideas for decor which turned out amazing!
Her theme was "Through the years" and she captured this by displaying pictures. She also printed information on what was popular during various years of their lives together on cd labels which were placed on each table for the guests enjoyment. As you will see below it turned out beautifully.

Maddie Cakes

My daughter, Maddie has been planning her little baking business for awhile now! When our local library hosted a kids vendor market....I knew that this would be a perfect opportunity to debut her ideas. Maddie did everything from helping design her logo (she picked the fonts and colors....I just typed!) to making all the treats. I just measured for her and put them in the oven. It took us about 31/2 hours to get all the baking done the night before...she never lost focus once. I'm so happy I was able to do this with her..as a middle child she definitely has to play the role sometimes. It was great "mommy and me" time and any excuse I have to make cupcake toppers is a bonus for me:)

My mom did something similar to this a few years ago without spending any additional money. She used my little brothers old diaper changer as a gardening station. She now stores extra pots on its shelves so that they don’t get damaged by being stacked. I thought it was pretty clever.

South Haven

Hi my name is Krista and I am interning at Executive Creations this summer.

I wanted to blog about this great historic town in Michigan called South Haven. It sets just up a hill from the beach where there is a beautiful lighthouse that you can still walk all the way out to. There are some great shops and delicious restaurants. I recommend Clementines, a neat restaurant that was once the town’s bank.

South Haven is a wonderful place to get some great pictures and find unique buys. When I visited, we stayed at Hotel Nichols near the heart of the town. It is a historic building in which every room is decorated differently, each one capturing history. Near the hotel there is an idle riverboat that has been transformed into a restaurant, positioned so that you can watch the boats come in and out of Lake Michigan...pretty neat!

I stumbled upon an absolute gem last month. Her name is Tanya and she is the owner and designer for Cake Crazy in Indianapolis. I needed a lego cake for my son's birthday party and Cake Crazy absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one. It looked perfect on the "birthday table"! I have to admit, I was a bit sad when we had to cut into it, but quickly got over it when I tasted it. So Good!

As I flipped through the pages of my Martha Stewart Wedding magazine this morning,
I came across this super-duper stinkin cute idea table numbers and favors. I had to post it!!! Walking in to a wedding with this escort card display just screams "this is gonna be fun"!

Help your reception take flight with floating escort cards that double as centerpieces once guests find their tables. On your wedding day, have a few friends fill 5-inch white balloons with helium (you can rent a tank from a party store). Once they're inflated, add guests' names and table numbers with a paint pen, tie on matching embroidery thread, and secure them to favor boxes filled with candy. Write on both sides of the balloons so loved ones can locate their names from every angle.
